Application of polyether TPU waterproof membrane in jacket fabrics

Polyether TPU waterproof membrane is a thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer film. Because the molecular chain contains an ether bond structure, it has excellent hydrolysis resistance and good low-temperature flexibility. It is one of the core materials for waterproof and moisture-permeable jacket fabrics.

The application in jackets is mainly reflected in composite structures. A common practice is to combine the polyether TPU film with the outer fabric through a dotted hot melt adhesive lamination process to form a two-layer composite fabric, which is then combined with a lining to form a three-layer structure. This structure can not only block the penetration of external rainwater, but also allow the sweat emitted by the human body to be emitted through the film, achieving a balance between waterproofing and moisture permeability. The thickness of the film is generally controlled between 0.015 mm and 0.05 mm, which can ensure sufficient water pressure bearing capacity without affecting the light feel and drape of the fabric.

From a performance perspective, the hydrolysis resistance of polyether TPU is significantly better than that of polyester TPU. It can still maintain waterproof performance after being exposed to a humid environment for a long time or after being washed multiple times, making it especially suitable for outdoor rainy environments. Its low-temperature flexibility is outstanding, and it can still maintain elasticity at about minus 30 degrees and is not easily brittle, meeting the needs of use in severe cold scenes such as mountaineering and skiing in winter. At the same time, the film itself has good elasticity and does not restrict body movement after being combined with four-way elastic fabric. It is wear-resistant and foldable, and can withstand repeated stretching without damage.

In addition, the polyether TPU film can be seamed through high-frequency hot pressing or hot air welding, and the heat-sealing strips are firmly attached, effectively eliminating the hidden danger of pinhole water seepage. Compared with PTFE films, it is more cost-effective and the processing process is environmentally friendly. The finished clothing is also recyclable, which is in line with the direction of lightweight and sustainable development of outdoor equipment.
